Get ready now for the toll requirement from July 2024!

Berlin,
  • Check whether your vehicles are subject to toll
  • Decide how you want to pay the toll: automatically with an OBU or before you start each journey
  • Craftsperson exemption: register vehicles with Toll Collect

On 1 July 2024, vehicles with a technically permissible maximum laden mass of more than 3.5 tonnes will be subject to toll. Vehicles used by trade businesses are exempt from tolls under certain conditions.

How to make sure you are ready

1. Check whether your vehicles are subject to toll

  • To do this, you will need to check part 1 of the vehicle registration certificate. The crucial information is in field F.1: vehicles with a TPMLM of more than 3.5 tonnes are subject to toll. Vehicles with a TPMLM of exactly 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kg) or less are not subject to toll.
  • Vehicle combinations are only subject to toll if the towing vehicle has a TPMLM of over 3.5 tonnes. (For example, a combination with over 3.5 tonnes TPMLM will not be subject to toll even after 1 July 2024 if the towing vehicle has a TPMLM of exactly 3.5 tonnes or less).
  • The toll requirement applies to vehicles that are intended or used for road haulage.
  • There are exemptions from the toll obligation for crafts businesses.

2. Decide how you want to pay the toll

  • The most convenient toll collection method is with a toll device (OBU, onboard unit). OBUs are provided by Toll Collect, European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) providers, or their sales partners.
  • If you would like to pay your toll with a Toll Collect OBU, please register your vehicles with Toll Collect first then arrange an installation appointment at a service partner workshop.
  • Before making your first trip with your new OBU, make sure that the weight is set to "<7.5 tonnes".
  • With the Toll Collect OBU, the toll will be collected automatically on motorways and federal roads from 1 July 2024.

3. Vehicles used by crafts businesses are exempt from tolls under certain conditions

  • The list of skilled trades for the craftsperson exemption can be found on the Federal Logistics and Mobility Office website: list of skilled trades for the craftsperson exemption
  • The craftsperson exemption applies if the vehicle is driven by an employee of the crafts business and if materials, equipment or machines are being transported that are necessary to carry out the services and work for the crafts business, or if handcrafted goods are being transported that have been produced, processed or repaired in the craftsperson's own business.
  • Crafts businesses can register vehicles online at the Toll Collect website.
  • Toll checks can be organised on the basis of this information in such a way as to minimise rejections of craftsperson vehicles and official procedures.
